After ED Heat on DMK Minister in Corruption Case, Son Meets Nirmala Sitharaman

-Post by Aare Keerthi

A political stir has emerged after the son of Tamil Nadu’s Municipal Administration and Water Supply Minister K. N. Nehru met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, just days after the Enforcement Directorate intensified its probe into a major corruption case involving the minister.

ED Probe Intensifies

The Enforcement Directorate recently urged law enforcement authorities to register a criminal case linked to alleged large-scale irregularities in the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department.

According to the agency, tender-related corruption amounting to over ₹1,000 crore is under the scanner. Officials claim that 7.5% to 10% of the value of awarded tenders may have been siphoned off as illegal payments to individuals allegedly close to the minister. The agency has suggested that these findings might represent only a fraction of the larger alleged network.

Arun Nehru’s Meeting With the Finance Minister

Amid the growing scrutiny, Arun Nehru, the minister’s son and a Member of Parliament, met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi. During the meeting, he submitted memorandums regarding:

  • Reforms to consumer protection norms governing credit rating agencies

  • Relief measures for families affected by the PACL scam, particularly those who lost their life savings

The timing of the meeting, occurring immediately after the ED’s communication, has sparked discussions among political observers.

Political Reactions

Minister K. N. Nehru has strongly denied all the allegations, calling them politically driven attempts aimed at tarnishing his image and his party. He has stated that he is prepared to face any legal scrutiny and has dismissed the investigation as part of a larger political agenda.

Opposition leaders in Tamil Nadu, however, have demanded a comprehensive investigation and urged authorities to take firm action based on the ED’s findings. They argue that the case highlights deeper issues of corruption within the government’s administrative machinery.

What Lies Ahead

In the coming weeks, the case is expected to remain active and closely monitored:

  • Further legal action may follow, including the potential registration of a formal FIR.

  • Political tensions between state and central entities may escalate.

  • Public interest is likely to increase as more developments surface in the investigation and related political interactions.

For now, the meeting between Arun Nehru and the Finance Minister has added another intriguing layer to an already high-profile corruption controversy.
